Ruth’s Harvest: Feeding Hungry Children

RuthsHarvest Background: Many families struggle to eat healthy meals and snacks everyday. Ruth’s Harvest, a free ministry of the Hanover Area Council of Churches, helps families eat more healthy meals and snacks provided through their local school.

How It Works: Each Friday afternoon students participating in the program  will receive a backpack containing healthy food and snacks  to take home with them. Each week, the child returns the empty backpack to the school to be restocked with food. Ruth’s Harvest may include the following items: cereal, breakfast bars, oatmeal, juice, tuna kits, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter crackers, soup, applesauce, fruit roll-ups, ravioli, vegetables, milk, and other nutritious foods.

Who Can Participate? Beginning in September 2013, Ruth’s Harvest began working with families whose children attend Hanover Schools. Plans are in progress to expand to Washington Street and Clearview elementary schools in September 2014. Families who qualify for the free and reduced lunch program also qualify for this program and participation is completely confidential. A parent or guardian must return a signed permission form for their child to participate, which can be obtained from their school principal.
